The Nomad Check-In

A quick pulse-check on how you’re really doing out there.
Created by Stephanie Johnson, LICSW · The Grounded Expat

The nomad life moves fast, and it is easy to go months without actually checking in with yourself. This is a short, gentle pulse-check on how you are really doing underneath the movement: your rootedness, your people, your energy, and the quiet question of where you are headed.

It takes about ten minutes. There are no wrong answers, only honest ones. Do it once a month, or any time the ground feels a little unsteady. Your writing saves automatically on this device and stays completely private to you.

This is an educational, self-reflection resource, not therapy, diagnosis, or a crisis service. If you are struggling beyond what journaling can hold, please reach out to someone you trust, a licensed professional, or local emergency services. You deserve real support, wherever in the world you are.
Check-in One

How Are You, Really?

Not the version you would post. The real one. Start by telling the truth to yourself.

In one honest word, how are you this month? Then a sentence on why.
What is the thing you have not said out loud to anyone lately?
Check-in Two

Rooted or Floating?

Some months you feel grounded and free; others, unmoored and adrift. Just notice where you are right now.

Does home feel like something you carry right now, or something you are missing? What is that like?
What is one small thing that has been making anywhere feel a little more like yours?
Check-in Three

Your People

Connection is the first thing to quietly slip on the road. Let’s check the thread.

When did you last feel genuinely known, not just met? What was that like?
Who could you reach toward this month, even in a small way?
Check-in Four

Your Energy

The road runs on constant adapting and deciding. It is worth noticing what your tank is actually at.

From running-on-empty to genuinely-restored, where is your energy right now? What is draining it most?
What is one thing you could let be easier, or say no to, this month?
Check-in Five

Toward or Away?

A quick, honest gut-check on what is driving you right now.

Right now, is the moving feeling more like moving toward something you want, or away from something you would rather not face?
What does that answer tell you, if you let it?
Check-in Six

One Kind Next Step

Not a big plan. Just one small, doable thing for the version of you reading this.

Based on everything above, what does the next month need to have a little more of?
One small step toward it, this week:

Checking in with yourself is the whole practice.

Come back to this any month the ground feels unsteady. And if one of these areas is asking for more than a check-in, there is a whole collection of guided journals for the inner side of nomad life, the rootlessness, the drift, and finding home within. Explore the nomad line → 🌿
